Manuel Francisco dos Santos, known simply as Garrincha ("wren" in Portuguese), is widely regarded as one of the two or three greatest Brazilian footballers of all time. Many soccer historians consider him the greatest dribbler the sport has ever seen. And only Pelé ranks safely ahead of him among those who have ever worn the Canarinho.
The right winger played professionally from 1953 to ‘72 and was a fixture on the Brazil National Team for over a decade from 1955 to ‘66. Garrincha led Brazil to back-to-back World Cups in 1958 and '62, putting his Seleção teammates on his back without an injured Pelé during the latter title run for which he earned Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
This special Jules Rimet player trophy was presented by the Brazil National Team governing body to Garrincha following Brazil's first FIFA World Cup triumph in 1958. Garrincha's role in back-to-back World Cup victories in 1958 and 1962 was indispensable—perhaps even more so than Pelé who had yet to reach his prime—and many historians consider him the greatest dribbler the sport has ever seen.
The championship trophy is cast in metal and finished in aged gold paint, faithfully replicating the iconic Nike of Samothrace goddess figure with both arms raised overhead supporting a wide octagonal bowl, her robes flowing behind her and wings spread wide. The figure rises from a ribbed and tapered stem set into a stepped black lacquered circular wooden base. An oval cartouche on the front of the base reads, "Brasil Campeão do Mundo 1958" (Brazil Champion of the World) in gold lettering with ornate decorative scroll framing.
Age-consistent wear to the gold finish is present throughout—most notably along the figure's raised arms, the tapered stem, and the base edges—with natural patina and paint loss consistent with decades of careful display and handling. The casting detail on the figure's face, drapery folds, and wing feathers remains clearly defined. The black lacquered base retains its finish with only minor edge wear.
Provenance is confirmed by a letter from Garrincha's daughter. The Brazilian legend died in 1983 at the age of 49.
