The La Canada Stakes is an annual thoroughbred race usually runduring the second week of February at Santa Anita Park in ArcadiaCalifornia. A Grade II event the race is open to four-year-old filliesand mares willing to race 1 & 1/8 miles on dirt. Inaugurated in1975 the race was initially contested at a distance of 1 & 1/16miles. The race is part of Santa Anita Park's La Canada Series of racesopen to newly turning/turned 4-year old fillies and run at an increasingdistance.
This lot features the championship trophy that was awarded to the team of “Family Style” which won the event on Feb. 15 1987 with a time of 1:49:3.Standing 11.25” tall the two-handled gold-washed sterling silver trophy cup sits atop a heavy green marble base that sports an engraved gold plaque that reads: “February 15 1987 One Mile & One Eighth Won By FAMILY STYLE Eugene V. Klein Owner D. Wayne Lukas Trainer Gary Stevens Jockey Time 1:49:3.” The front of the two-handled trophy is engraved “LA CANADA STAKES” and those words are centered above the engraved logo of Santa Anita Park. The whole trophy including the base weighs 12.6 pounds; the sterling silver cup along weighs 1216 grams. Thebottom is hallmarked "Sterling" by "Kirk Stieff."
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
