The “Gas House Gang” Cardinals were one of the most dominating teams of the 1930s, winning a pair of World Championships and three pennants. This collection of scrappy ballplayers was led by their ace pitcher, Dizzy Dean. His hijinks on and off the field - after being beaned in the head by a ball he told a reporter “The doctors x-rayed my head and didn’t find anything” - offered a welcome distraction to a nation mired in the Great Depression. And besides being good press for the sportswriters, Dean was one of the greatest pitchers of baseball’s Golden Age. Dean won 150 major league games with 102 coming from the 1933-1936 seasons alone. A broken toe suffered in the 1937 All-Star Game forced Dean to alter his delivery, leading to a career shortening injury. The loquacious ace went on to be a popular play-by-play man for CBS’s “Game of the Week” through 1965. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953 and remains one of the most beloved characters of baseball. This Rawlings Playmaker baseball has been signed on a side panel by Dean in strong marker. The ball shows some light toning from age and displays beautifully. The ball comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
