The incomparable Muhammad Ali was one of professional boxings greatest heavyweight champions of all time. Born January 17 1942 in Louisville Kentucky Ali became the world heavyweight champ in 1964. Largely considered the sports most colorful and controversial figure in its long and storied history Ali came up fighting through the ranks using his given name: Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. A Golden Gloves champion in 1959 and an Olympic gold medalist in 1960 Clay was on his way to superstar status. He didnt change his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali until 1964 following his first victory against reigning heavyweight champ Sonny Liston when he became a member of the Nation of Islam. Now named Ali he would go on to own the heavyweight division over much of the next 16 years until his retirement from boxing in 1981. This is a rare hand-painted black Everlast boxing glove that renowned sports artist Wayne Prokopiak finished in 1993. It shows Ali in his prime and has been signed by the champ in silver marker across the top of the portrait. What makes this autographed item so unique is that Ali actually signed it Cassius Clay which has rarely happened since his conversion to Islam almost 40 years ago. Prokopiak has added his signature at the bottom of the painted portrait of Clay. A true boxing memento for any boxing aficionado.
