Before Roger Clemens became a Cy Young Award-winning pitcher for both the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays he was hard-throwing right-hander for the New Britain Red Sox of the Double-A Eastern League. Drafted 19th overall by the Boston Red Sox in 1983 Clemens signed with the team on June 21 and quickly rose through the minor league system before making his major league debut on May 15 1984. Though his time with the minor league affiliate New Britain was short Clemens did get a chance to play in Double A. This lot features a 1984 game-worn New Britain Red Sox road jersey attributed to Clemens before he got the call up to the bigs. We were unable to find photos or a roster sheet with uniform numbers to verify 100% that he worn this shirt. The size 40 Wilson jersey shows minimal usage and includes RED SOX across the front in navy blue tackle twill and The Rockets patented No. 21 on the back also in navy blue tackle twill. A slight half-inch tear is present on the bottom of the left sleeve. All seven original buttons on the jersey remain intact.
