Ken Norton was the second man to beat Muhammad Ali breaking Ali's jaw and sending him to the hospital in their 1973 heavyweight fight.  Norton the chiseled ex-Marine frustrated Ali three times in all including their final bout at Yankee Stadium where he was sure he had beaten him once again.

He was the only heavyweight champion never to win the title in the ring and boxing fans still talk about the bruising battle he waged with Larry Holmes for the title in 1978. But he was forever linked to Ali for the 39 rounds they fought over three fights with very little separating one man from the other in the ring.

Presented here is a pair of Norton signed Seyer professional model boxing gloves from the San Diego Hall of Champions collection. Norton was born in Jacksonville Il. but San Diego became his adopted hometown. The gloves were part of a large group of Norton memorabilia that was donated to the museum. Thought details regarding Norton’s use of these gloves are not known they bear the hallmarks of fight worn use including notations inside the wrist of each glove “K.N.” and a scripted “E.J.” that appears to be an official inspector’s initials. The gloves show excellent usage wear and are absent laces which are typically cut off post-fight. Fight photographs show Norton wearing Seyer gloves including his second bout with Ali held at the San Diego Sports Arena in 1973. Norton has signed each glove in faded black ink.

Letter of provenance from San Diego Hall of Champions.
