After more than twenty years in the Negro Leagues, Satchel Paige was finally allowed to show what he could do in the major leagues when he debuted as a 41-year-old “rookie” in 1948. This superbly composed Type 1 photo captures Satch mid-windup during the 1948 or 1949 seasons. As a major leaguer, Paige did not disappoint, going 6-1 with a 2.48 ERA for the World Champion Cleveland Indians in 1948. This Type 1 photo has taken on a warm sepia tone with age. The corners have some creasing, with a small section of the white border missing in the lower left corner. The reverse has handwritten printing instructions. This is certainly one of the nicest images taken during Satchel’s first seasons in the majors. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA and graded Type 1 Authentic.
