During the 1948 season, Negro League legend Satchel Paige finally showed what he could do against Major League hitters in a regular-season game. This Type 1 photo features the timeless ace talking over pitching strategy with his new teammate, Bob Feller. The pair had pitched against each other during several winter tours, but this is the first time the two fireballers were on the same ballclub. This photo, taken on July 9, 1948, documents the day Satchel Paige made his MLB debut. Satchel did not disappoint in his “rookie” (he was over 40 at the time) season, going 6-1 with a 2.48 ERA to help the Indians win the 1948 World Championship. The Type 1 photo has sharp contrast and detail with a warm tone throughout. The reverse features the original caption slug, the Acme Newspictures credit stamp, and handwritten notations. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
