In the spring of 1925, Philadelphia Athletics owner/manager Connie Mack was tipped off by his old friend Frank “Home Run” Baker about a big, muscular teenager who was tearing the cover off the ball in Maryland’s Eastern Shore League. By May this unknown 17-year-old kid, still a junior in high school, had made his big-league debut and was a member of the A’s. Thus began the career of Jimmie Foxx, the greatest right-handed slugger of his generation and, arguably, of all time. Foxx would win three A.L. MVP awards, lead the league in homers four times, and take home the coveted Triple Crown in 1933 on his road to Cooperstown.
This magnificent original action shot captures Foxx, circa early 1930s (his back-to-back MVP era) in his full Athletics uni making a leaping attempt to catch a very high throw. The comical exasperated expression on Jimmie's face in mid-air comes through vividly. This timely piece of photography was done by the Brown Brothers, America's first stock photo agency formed in New York City in 1904 by Arthur and Charles Brown. Multiple Brown Brothers stamps and notations appear on the reverse. Aside from three rounded corners, it has been preserved amazingly well.
