Hall of Famer Bill Dickey was the premier backstop of his generation, his offensive prowess only matched by his remarkable ability to handle a pitching staff. He came up in 1928 and ran the New York Yankees pitching rotation from the latter half of the Gehrig/Ruth era through the arrival of Joe DiMaggio and beyond. Dickey proved a consummate competitor, sparring with the opposition while calming the often brilliant but erratic Lefty Gomez. He anchored the second generation of Murderer's Row, knocking in more than 100 runs a year from 1936-39 as the Yankees won four straight World Series. With 11 All-Star appearances and seven World Series titles in a career that culminated in 1946, Dickey trails only Yogi Berra as the most accomplished Yankees catcher of all time.
Offered here is a fabulous 1930 original photograph of the legendary catcher tracking a pop fly on the practice field, presumably during Spring Training before his second full big-league season. His lazer focus on the task at hand is captured brilliantly in this crystal clear black and white image taken by famous New York sports photographer, William C. Greene. The reverse has Greene's official stamp from the N.Y.-World Telegram as well as an addiitonal stamp from The Sporting News and various handwritten notations including the year. Crease-free with super sharp corners and smooth edges, condition is close to pristine.
