Rare opportunity to bid on an antique football equipment ensemble (helmet jersey and pants) that dates to circa 1910-20. The vintage all leather football helmet with dog ear flaps features a "Stall & Dean" manufacturer's stamp on the forehead with "5435 M". The elastic forehead strap and cotton batting inside indicate a 1911-20 design. The leather crown has maintained its soft and supple yet smooth texture. The chinstrap is missing and the interior padding have all but worn thin. Overall it comes in VG-EX condition as the exterior has been well-preserved despite obvious wear and a century of aging. An outstanding high grade early dog ear leather football helmet from a top manufacturer the likes of which are becoming increasingly scarce in any form.

Next is a fabulous football sweater from the early 1900s. This long-sleeved wool pullover garment comes in Crimson red with four friction strips of gray canvas-like material that run vertically down the front perhaps to aid in maintaining possession of the pigskin. There are two more gray friction strip panels on each arm. Sewn inside the rear collar is a "B.H. Dyas Co." manufacturer's label that reveals the company's "Hollywood Los Angeles" headquarters along with size "40". The sweater shows light to moderate wear with a one square inch hole behind the left shoulder and two smaller holes in the red wool fabric. An incredibly rare style and true gridiron classic.

Finally we have the early 20th century quilted football pants. The lace-up Khaki-colored relic boasts a quilted design and belt loops indicate a dual system was employed for fastening the garment. The bottom are equipped with elastic for tightening the pants at the ankles/feet. The thick internal knee and lower leg padding is intact and still bears its protective qualities. No manufacturer's tagging is present. There are a half dozen holes in the waistline from where the pants were nailed to their mannequin dummy for museum display. A 2" tear has occurred in the rear belt line and two of the six belt loops have torn loose. All other elements remain intact. Overall the pants come in NM condition. All three pieces represent an extraordinary retrospective of gridiron's past and development from its primitive years.

Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.

Note: The mannequin dummy is not included.
