The late great Byron Nelson was an American professional golfer between 1935 and 1946 one of the greats not only in his day but over the history of the sport. Affectionately known as Lord Byron he won many tournaments during the course of his relatively brief career and is most often remembered for having won 11 consecutive tournaments and 18 total tournaments in 1945. He retired officially at the young age of 34 to be a rancher later becoming a commentator and lending his name to the HP Byron Nelson Championship the first PGA Tour event to be named for a professional golfer. This lot features one of Nelsons 4 irons a circa 1970s club he would have used at some time during his retirement years. The 39 MacGregor Byron Nelson 4 iron shows slight usage and boasts a two-tone (black and white) Pro Only grip. This is the club that Nelson donated to the special project on behalf of the Boys Club of Royal Oak Michigan. In a signed typed letter on Byron Nelson letterhead that accompanied the donation dated Jan. 16 1978 Nelson wrote: I am delighted to contribute a No. 4 iron to your program for getting the youth of our country interested din playing golf. I feel that this is a very worthwhile endeavor. We need to try to get as many young people as possible interested in golf for two reasons one if for the perpetuation of the game and also to give our young people something to do that is so great as golf.

Includes original signed letter that Nelson sent to the Boys' Club of Royal Oak as well as a black-and-white 8" x 10" photo showing Lord Byron in action.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
