Part of the "Kareem Showtime Photo Collection" (Lot 18), this timely shot by Lakers team photographer Malek Mansour captures his friend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, speaking to the crowd in a post-game ceremony on April 5, 1984, after becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. Playing on a neutral court in Las Vegas, the Lakers beat the Jazz 129-115 as Kareem moved Wilt Chamberlain to #2 on the NBA career scoring list. The Big Dipper, shown in the background among a group that included Commissioner David Stern, was very supportive of Kareem’s pursuit of the record. Fresh to the hobby, this original Type 1 photograph comes from an album collection gifted to Kareem’s ex-girlfriend Brenda Venus four decades ago.
Kareem retired from the NBA following the 1988-89 season as the league’s all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points. The 7’ 2” center led UCLA to three consecutive NCAA titles (1967-69) before winning six NBA championships (five with the Lakers in the 1980s).
