Presented is a Finland (Suomi) National Team home jersey from an April 17, 1986 friendly against Brazil worn by forward Ari Hjelm and preserved in the Oscar Bernardi Collection. Finland faced Brazil during the tail end of Oscar's international career during which he served as Brazil's trusted center back on three World Cup squads. After this particular friendly match, Hjelm and Oscar exchanged shirts and this has been in Oscar's possession ever since.
Hjelm appeared in 100 international matches for Finland from 1983-96, holding the record for most caps by a Finnish national until being surpassed by Jari Litmanen in 2006. He is also the fifth highest scorer in Finnish history with 20 goals.
The white short-sleeve jersey made by Adidas features the brand's now-faded Trefoil logo on the right chest alongside the embroidered Suomi (Finland) national team badge bearing a white shield with a blue Nordic cross, the national symbol of Finland. It has a blue V-neck collar with blue cuffed sleeve ends and blue Adidas three-stripe detailing along the shoulders. The reverse displays large blue "10" numerals in the block sans-serif style of the period. The shirt displays solid wear with heavy fabric pilling and moderate soiling and sweat staining.
The Oscar Bernardi Collection
This shirt comes from the personal collection of José Oscar Bernardi, better known as Oscar, who played for the Brazil National Team from 1977 to 1986. Included is a letter of provenance signed by Oscar. Most jerseys in the collection were obtained directly through player swaps after competition. Others were acquired via gifts or trade with footballers in Oscar’s wide network of teammates and friends. At age 71, he still resides in Brazil and is ready for his collection to be appreciated by others in the hobby.
