A perfectly timed shot that captured history in the making. It’s Opening Day of the 1974 season at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. The Braves started the game with a walk and a single. With one out, Hank Aaron stepped to the plate against Jack Billingham. The Reds pitcher got three balls and a strike before he took Billingham deep, hitting his 714th career home run to tie Babe Ruth. Aaron would surpass the Bambino a few days later to officially become baseball's new Home Run King.
This is an incredibly rare uncropped Type 1 photo of Aaron tying baseball’s most hallowed record. The front of the photo has wide white borders. The reverse has the Wide World Photos credit stamp, original caption slug, and several handwritten notations. The 8x10 photo comes in outstanding NM-MT condition and has been encapsulated as Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
