UCLA All-American Ann Meyers Drysdale was the first woman player drafted by the Women's Professional Basketball League (WPBL) in 1978 to the New Jersey Gems. Competing for the Gems she led the league in scoring and was the WPBL's co-MVP for the 1979-80 season wearing her trademark uniform number 15. Not surprisingly she was selected in February to the "West" squad for the WPBL's All-Star Game in Chicago.
This lot features her game-worn West All-Star squad uniform from the 1979-80 WPBL season. The ladies medium red pullover jersey is sporting the proper "Medalist Sand-Knit" manufacturer's tagging on the inside rear collar with an adjacent "12" strip tag at the bottom. The front of the jersey includes Meyers Drysdale's uniform number "15" in white tackle twill numbering with a pair of stars and "West" just below that also in white tackle twill. The reverse of the jersey which is outlined in blue and white throughout simply shows her uniform number "15" albeit much larger on the back. The accompanying shorts are also in red outlined in blue and white and include the "Medalist Sand-Knit" tagging on the inseam adjacent to another strip tag reading "12." The uniform shows limited use and is truly a commemorative piece as the WPBL ceased to exist following the 1980-81 season.
