During her four-year collegiate basketball career Ann Meyers was one of the country's top female guards. Besides being the first woman ever to earn a four-year basketball scholarship to UCLA Meyers was also a four-time All-America selection. The 1977-78 season was an especially memorable one for the Meyers and the Lady Bruins. Competing in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) which was the precursor to the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship UCLA finished first by defeating Maryland 90-74 in the championship game. The team finished the season with a 27-3 overall record under first-year head coach Billie Moore.
This lot features Meyers' UCLA Women's BASKETBALL "Outstanding Athlete" Award Trophy. The three-tiered wooden trophy measures 12" wide by 15" tall and includes an artist's depiction of the various women's sports being offered at UCLA at the top followed by a special plaque that reads: "UCLA Department of Women's Intercollegiate Athletics OUTSTANDING ATHLETE BASKETBALL 1977-78." Beneath that on the trophy's second tier is a nameplate reading "ANN MEYERS."
