There was no bigger Willie Mays fan than his longtime manager, Leo Durocher. The respect and awe Durocher had for Mays shows in just about every photograph taken of the pair. This one, dating to New York's 1954 World Series Championship campaign, is no exception. Taken on September 17, the two are shown relaxing in the Giants home dugout at the Polo Grounds, enjoying the lead the Giants had in the pennant race. Mays had a sensational '54 season, smashing 41 homers and hitting .345 to win both the NL Batting Title and MVP. The Giants would go on to sweep the Indians in the World Series thanks in large part to Mays’ incredible over the shoulder catch in Game 1, still regarded as one of the most memorable moments in sports history.
This Type 1 photo measures 6½” by 8-5/8” and shows edge wear along with a piece missing from the upper right corner. There are surface abrasions and overall toning present with creases and some surface paper loss. The back of the photo has the original caption slug affixed along with International News Service stamps, handwritten notations and a Boston Herald hologram. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
