Though a generation apart and athletes in two different sports, Jim Thorpe and Ted Williams were the best in their time. This atmospheric photo was taken by Ed Fitzgerald in 1952 for the United Press. The two American icons are photographed in profile, with Thorpe donning traditional western wear complete with a cowboy hat and Williams in the more relaxed attire of sport coat and open shirt. The studio lighting is flawless, and the photographer has captured every detail of Thorpe and Williams’ faces. A Copy of this photo was later colorized and used in 1959 for card number 70 in Fleer’s Ted Williams card set.

The original Type 1 photo measures a large 11” x 13 ½” and has been fixed in a custom matte sometime around its original printing in 1952. It is in outstanding condition with no flaws to report. This photo can also very simply be removed from the matting if you would like and you will see the stunning white borders that outlines the photo. What puts this beautiful dual portrait over the top is that both Jim Thorpe and Ted Williams have signed the matte below their image along with Ed Fitzgerald and the date, “1952.”

The matte shows wear and some staining, though not enough to affect the signatures or photograph. The reverse has some residual glue stains and tape has been affixed to hold it in place to the matte frame. This photograph has been encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA and comes with a PSA/DNA LOA for the signatures, an ungraded example of Fleer card number 70 that uses this photo, and a 1952 newspaper clipping of the original photo in use.
