From the greatest closer in the history of baseball comes his 2004 game-worn and autographed road jersey. Mariano Rivera played his entire career with the New York Yankees and was perhaps the only player respected enough to wear the iconic No. 42 after Jackie Robinson. It's only fitting that the number is now retired for good. The Panamanian legend dominated hitters by mastering one pitch--his magical cutter. While his legacy on the mound will be most remembered for his postseason success in 2004 Rivera had perhaps the best regular season of his career. He went 4-2 with a 1.94 ERA and led the American League with a career-high 53 saves to finish third in the A.L. Cy Young voting.
The gray button-down jersey has "NEW YORK" arched across the chest in navy blue tackle twill outlined in white with the famed "42" applied to the back insimilar tackle twill fashion. The MLB logo patch is sewn behind the collar. The sleeve ends have navy and white elastic trim. Proper "Russell Athletic Authentic Collection" tagging with flag tags for "100% polyester Size 48 and +2" extra length" appears on the front left tail above a "1998" strip tag to indicate the season.Affixed to the manufacturer's tagging is a Steiner Sports authentication hologram (#19701). Rivera has autographed the front ofthe jersey with the added inscription “2004 Game Used” in lovely 9/10 blue marker. Jersey exhibits solid wear with a soiled area on the back right side. It comes with a Steiner LOA for game-use signature and inscription plus a full LOA from PSA/DNA for the autograph.
As a bonus this lot also includes a 2000 World Series 16" x 20" photo (framed to 22 x 26) autographed by Rivera with a Steiner COA and MLB Auth. hologram (BB391567).
