The late Johnny Tapia was a five-time world boxing champion who was born and resided in Albuquerque New Mexico. He boxed in three different weight divisions during his professional career: Super Flyweight Bantamweight and Featherweight. Through 23 years of boxing Tapia had compiled a record of 59-5-2. He died of heart failure at the age of 45 in 2012. This lot includes a pair of Tapias fight-worn black-and-gold satin trunks he wore during a WBO Super Flyweight championship bout versus Danny Romero on July 18 1997. Tapia defeated Romero in a 12-round unanimous decision at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas Nevada. The trunks which show fight use include special gold embroidery across the front (TAPIA) and back (Mi Vida Loca) of the waistline. The latter when translated from Spanish means My Crazy Life. On the front of the satin trunks across the right thigh is embroidered his deceased mothers name: Virginia. And across the left thigh also embroidered in gold is Johnny Tapia New Mexico with a pair of gold boxing gloves dangling between his name and the state. The Bertinelli-manufactured trunks are size S.
