Presented here is a pair of Shaquille O’Neal’s 1996-97 game-worn and dual-autographed Reebok sneakers from his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers. After four great years with the Orlando Magic the 7’1” 325-lb center signed with L.A. a free agent and took his behemoth talents to Hollywood. The Lakers finished the 1996-97 regular season with a 56-26 record. Shaq led the team in both scoring (26.2) and rebounding (12.5) as they advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals. The shoes come with outstanding provenance from a celebrity agent based in Hollywood who acquired many items after Laker games at the Forum.
Shaq’s white leather Reebok ‘Dunkmob’ signature model shoes come in a high-top design with a snowy white leather body and Lakers purple trim around the laces upper ankles and heels. A rubber Reebok logo in purple appears on the outer ankle area. The Shaq “Dunkman” logo emblazons each tongue. A pumping mechanism similar to that used in earlier Reebok Pumps is featured on the outer upper ankles. Air-bubbled midsoles give this shoe an innovative look for its time. The interior tagging displays Shaq’s gargantuan Size 22 along with the important “SAMPLE PYE” designation indicating player-issued status. The laces appear to be the originals and both interior insoles present. Shaq has signed both shoes in 9/10 black Sharpie with his No. “34” inscribed. Both shoes display solid game use with scuffing on the exterior evidence of sock-sweating on the interior and proper heel drag. Overall they come largely as-issued and problem-free with all structural elements in the soles completely intact. The Bunyanesque pair represents an amazing representation of Shaq’s imposing size and presence.
