Easily the most lionized athlete in the history of Japan’s professional national pastime Sadaharu Oh also owns a leading claim to the title of baseball’s greatest all-time home run slugger. Across a 22-season career with the Central League Yomiuri Giants – Japan’s most celebrated popular and successful team – the left-handed hitting and throwing first baseman stroked a career total of 868 round-trippers a number that outstrips those of major league baseball’s most potent long-ball sluggers Barry Bonds (762 in 22 seasons) Hank Aaron (755 in 23 seasons) and original “Sultan of Swat” George Herman “Babe” Ruth (714 in 22 seasons). On the basis of raw numbers alone it is indisputable that the charismatic and workaholic Oh produced one of the most impressive career resumes found anywhere that professional baseball has been played at the highest levels.
Oh played his entire professional career with Japan's Yomiuri Giants and was their manager from 1984 to 1988. He also managed the Fukuoka Daiei/Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks from 1995 to 2008. He was the manager of the Japanese national team in the inaugural World Baseball Classic. The Japanese team defeated the Cuban national team for the championship. The offered Yomiuri Giants uniform was worn by Oh during the 1993 World Children's Baseball Fair (WCBF) as evidenced by his large inscription and date on the front of the jersey. This major event was initiated by the world's two home-run kings - Japan's Sadaharu Oh and America's Hank Aaron. Their aim was to expand this wonderful sport baseball throughout the world and help children to learn the game. They also hoped this event would promote friendship among children and help to create a borderless world. The uniform (pants and jersey) features Decente manufacturers tagging with “93” dating. Items show appropriately light use and Oh’s large signature spans 11” across the jersey front. Any items worn by the legendary Japanese slugger in any capacity are extremely scarce.
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
