Former MLB infielder Dave Silvestri was drafted by the Houston Astros in the second round of the 1988 MLB Draft. That same year he played internationally for the United States baseball team in the 1988 Baseball World Cup where he batted .333 with 10 runs scored as the club's shortstop. He won a silver medal with the team. He also helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 1988 Seoul (South Korea) Summer Olympic Games.
This lot features Silvestri’s 1988 Team USA Gold Medalist 10K gold ring. Set on top of a large blue stone is a series of small gemstones that spell out “USA” in the center of the ring. Around the outer edge reads “1988 OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST” in raised lettering. On one shank it reads “SILVESTRI” above the United States Baseball Federation logo followed by Silvestri’s uniform number “4.” The other shank reads “XXIV OLYMPIAD SEOUL” followed by the five Olympic rings and “USA 5 JAPAN 3” to reflect the final score of the gold-medal-clinching game. The size 11¼ ring which is engraved “FROM MILLINGTON USBF” on its inner band is also stamped “10K.”
