In 1987 a then-27-year-old Magic Johnson led the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA title for the fourth time in the decade. He averaged 23.9 points and a league-leading 12.2 assists per game and was named MVP of the NBA Finals that year by virtue of his outstanding efforts which included hitting the game-winning bucket – a baby skyhook – in Game 4 against the Celtics in Boston.This lot which is part of the Willie Stargell Collection features the 1987 “Dunlop Professional Athlete of the Year” trophy that Johnson won and then gifted to Stargell sometime after.
According to the inscription on the trophy Magic was issued this award at a special dinner held in Buffalo New York on February 8 1988. The unique trophy features a black-and-silver triangular base upon which rests a silver-plated bull sculpture that stretches 13” into the air. Engraved into the silver portion of the specially shaped base is the following text: “DUNLOP PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR 1987 – E. “MAGIC” JOHNSON – Buffalo N.Y. February 8 1988.” The trophy weighs nearly 10 pounds.
