Featured here is the late great Kirby Puckett’s 1987-1989 game-used and autographed Louisville Slugger bat from the personal collection of former MLB catcher and longtime Minnesota Twins coach Phil Roof. It is graded GU 9.5 by the experts at PSA/DNA. One of the most consistent hitters in American League history Puckett never batted lower than .288 in any season and finished his 12-year career with a .318 average helping guide the Twinkies to World Series Championships in 1987 and 1991. The 5’ 8” centerfielder was equally adept with his glove and won six Gold Gloves.  From 1987 to ’89 when he used this piece of lumber Kirby had his three best batting averages at .332 .356 and .339 respectively leading the A.L. in hits each season and winning his lone batting title in 1988.

The 34.5-inch 32.7-oz. ash bat with a black finish remains uncracked and exhibits evidence of outstanding game use. Many ball marks and stitch impressions are visible all over the barrel including blue ink transfers and white leather scuffs. The handle has been taped in a thin crisscross pattern in typical Puckett fashion to enhance the grip. There is a moderate coat of pine tar on the upper handle. The model number “C243” is stamped into the barrel and Puckett’s massive autograph with “Best Wishes” and “#34” inscriptions covers the barrel in thick white paint pen. Fresh to the hobby after three decades in the possession of Kirby’s former coach this awesome gamer is easily one of the best Puckett examples ever to surface.

Includes LOA from Phil Roof. Full LOA (1B12506) from John Taube of PSA/DNA with GU 9.5 grade. Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.

Provenance: This lot comes directly from the personal collection of former MLB catcher Phil Roof who logged 15 seasons (1961 1964-77) behind the dish with nine different franchises most notably the Minnesota Twins. Roof spent five consecutive years (1971-76) with the Twins where he was teammates with Harmon Killebrew. Following his playing career Roof served as a bullpen coach for three teams before managing in the Twins organization for 16 years (mostly in the PCL) until retiring from full-time duties in 2005. He received each of the bats featured in this auction directly from the players as gifts.
