Featured here is a rare pillbox-style Pittsburgh Pirates cap worn by starting pitcher Luis Tiant during his lone season with the club in1981. Tiant won 229 games in his big-league career spent primarily in Cleveland and Boston. The two-time All-Star won 20 or more games four times and led the American League in ERA twice. He finished his 19-year career (1964-82) with a stingy 3.30 ERA.
The New Era Pro Model cap is properly tagged on the rear sweatband. No size tag is present. Tiant's Pirates uniform number "38" iswritten on the underside of the brim in faded black marker with his bold blue 8-9/10 autograph running over it. Hat displays heavy use shown with sweat and other forms of staining inside and out as well as fabric loss on the left outer brim. Very tough to find these pillbox caps in the hobby made famous by the Willie Stargell-led late 70's and early 80's Pirates squads.
