Featured here is a heavily-coveted game-worn hockey piece you will rarely find in the hobby: Ron Hextall's Philadelphia Flyers goalie mask from his 1986-87 rookie season - the year he won the Conn Smythe Trophy after leading the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals where they lost in 7 games to the Oilers (i.e. Gretzky). Best remembered for his fine years in Philadelphia which included five 30+ win seasons highlighted by a career-high 37 during his rookie campaign Ron Hextall also left his mark on hockey in more menacing and unique ways. His tough-guy attitude gave him the all-time record for penalty minutes by a goaltender. In addition his amazing puck-handling ability allowed him to become the first NHL goalie to actually take the puck down the ice and score; he was also the first goalie to score in a playoff game. Hextall totaled 296 wins in his 13-year NHL career.

The Cooper white helmet and white caged mask is the SK 2000 model worn by many goaltenders during the 1980s. Cooper made sure you knew who manufactured it as their brand name is stamped in seven different places. The Cooper logo with a fading "SK 2000" appears at the top of the helmet with "Cooper HM 30" across the chin. The Flyers logo decal is stuck on both sides with Hextall's No. 27 decal on the rear. Barely visible is Hextall's signature in a faded yellow-toned pen on the back right of the helmet. The cage is attached in two places top and bottom; the two side latches are missing. All interior padding and cloth straps are intact. This design had no chinstrap; just an extra layer of padding for the chin. The mask shows plenty of game use full of marks and scratches that come with playing one of sport's most abusive positions which Hextall did with pride and aggression. You won't find a gem like this anywhere. Flyer and hockey collectors rejoice!

Includes a letter of provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
