Baseball fans cannot think back to 1985 without Brett Saberhagen instantly coming to mind. In just his second season in the majors, Bret Saberhagen dominated the American League by going 20-6 with a 2.87 ERA over 235 innings, leading the Kansas City Royals to their first World Series title in franchise history. In the Fall Classic against the Cardinals, Saberhagen had two complete-game victories, the second being a shutout in the Game 7 clincher. He won the AL Cy Young and would do it again in 1989. During the ’85 regular season, the ace right-hander struck out 158 and walked just 38 batters, showing pinpoint control that few saw coming from the 21-year-old kid.
Except for maybe, Guy Hansen, who scouted Saberhagen out of Grover Cleveland H.S. in Reseda, CA (drafted in 19th round in 1982) and later coached him on the Royals. Featured here is a hobby-fresh circa 1985 Bret Saberhagen game-used fielder’s glove gifted to Hansen and later signed by Saberhagen for his good friend who helped make his big-league dreams possible.
The blue Franklin 9506 professional model fielder's glove, made of top grade ‘Pro Tanned’ cowhide, exhibits outstanding use with heavy wear in the pocket, web face, and finger sleeves – broken in to a level that it was clearly one of Bret’s favorites. His uniform No. “18” is penned in black on the outer thumb along with “1985 & 1989 American Lg. Cy Young Award”. Saberhagen’s full name autograph appears in blue pen just above on the outer web. Based on the inscription, the glove was signed after Saberhagen won his second Cy Young in ’89 with a 23-6 record and 2.16 ERA.
Includes LOA from glove authenticators Dennis Eskin and John Taube of PSA/DNA. Former Royals scout and pitching coach Guy Hansen has signed a letter of provenance attesting to the glove coming from his personal collection. Autograph sticker certified by PSA/DNA (AP75785).
