Here is an exceptional piece of North American Soccer League history: a 1980 New York Cosmos away jersey worn by the Brazil National Team's star center-back Oscar Bernardi. personal collection. Oscar joined the Cosmos at their peak, sharing a locker room with German legend Franz Beckenbauer and fellow Brazilian Carlos Alberto. This match-worn shirt is one of Oscar's most prized personal items offered in his comprehensive jersey collection. The Cosmos won the NASL Soccer Cup in 1980 — the club's third title in four seasons — making this shirt an exceptional collector's item.
The long-sleeve jersey comes in navy blue cotton with subtle vertical pinstripe ribbing, manufactured by Italian sportswear brand Ellesse with the maker's label and size tag visible at the inner collar. It features a yellow and white striped turn-down collar and yellow #4 numbering on the right arm. The left chest bears the colorful embroidered Cosmos club badge — the famous circular crest with a stylized football and the distinctive Cosmos swoosh design in blue, yellow, and green. The reverse displays "OSCAR" sewn straight across the upper back above Oscar's "4" numeral in matching yellow gold twill. The jersey exhibits solid wear with fabric pilling and light soiling consistent with NASL match use.
The Oscar Bernardi Collection
This shirt comes from the personal collection of José Oscar Bernardi, better known as Oscar, who played for the Brazil National Team from 1977 to 1986. Included is a letter of provenance signed by Oscar. Most jerseys in the collection were obtained directly through player swaps after competition. Others were acquired via trade with footballers in Oscar’s wide network of teammates and friends. At age 71, he still resides in Brazil and is ready for his collection to be appreciated by others.
