Presented from the Oscar Bernardi Collection is this 1980 New York Cosmos (NASL) home jersey worn by the great Franz Beckenbauer and gifted directly to Oscar, his Cosmos teammate. Beckenbauer joined the Cosmos in 1977 after his legendary career with Bayern Munich and West Germany, helping transform American soccer and winning the NASL Soccer Bowl in 1977, 1978, and 1980. Provenance directly from his teammate Oscar — the Brazilian international who shared the Cosmos locker room with Beckenbauer — makes this an extraordinarily well-documented piece of NASL history.
The short-sleeved jersey is constructed in white cotton with a polo-style collar trimmed in royal blue and yellow stripes, consistent with the Cosmos' NASL kit of the period. The front features Beckenbauer's iconic number "6" in blue on the left chest, alongside the colorful Cosmos circular badge with a stylized soccer ball at center. The rear displays "BECKENBAUER" in blue lettering arched above a large "6" in matching blue twill. Another matching "6" is stitched on the right shoulder. Tagged by Ellesse, the Italian sportwear brand's label is visible inside the collar. The all-original shirt displays ample evidence of repeated match use with stretching, pilling, puckering, moderate sweat-staining, and light spot soiling.
The Oscar Bernardi Collection
This shirt comes from the personal collection of José Oscar Bernardi, better known as Oscar, who played center-back for the Brazil National Team from 1977 to 1986. Included is a letter of provenance signed by Oscar. Most jerseys in the collection were obtained directly through player swaps immediately after competition. Others were acquired via trade with footballers in Oscar’s wide network of teammates and friends. At age 71, he still resides in Brazil and is ready for his collection to be appreciated by others.
