The Avco World Trophy also known as the Avco Cup was the championship trophy of the original World Hockey Association (19721979). The 1977-78 Winnipeg Jets took the World Hockey Association (WHA) title and the Avco Cup after compiling a final regular season record of 50-28-2 and then defeating the New England Whalers in the finals. The team was coached by Larry Hillman and its captain was Lars-Erik Sjoberg. This lot features the 1978 Winnipeg Jets 10K Gold WHA Championship ring that belonged to Ken Baird one of the teams top defensemen. The Jostens Company manufactured the ring from 10k gold and used a small 12-point diamond as the central feature and it is surrounded by circular text in raised gold lettering that reads: WHA Champions. One shank sports a banner holding the words Avco Cup just above the image of the Avco Cup and the year 78. On the other shank that ring boasts the name BAIRD positioned directly above the Winnipeg Jets logo. The inside of the ring is stamped JOSTENS 10K. A very cool piece of hockey memorabilia from the short-lived professional hockey league that produced several future Hockey Hall of Famers. The ring comes housed inside a top wood cylinder presentation box that sports the Winnipeg Jets logo on top.
