Born in Brazil’s southern state of Minas Gerais, Edson Arantes do Nascimento – the football legend known only as Pelé – signed his first professional contract in 1956 at the age of 15 with prestigious Brazilian club, Santos FC. The following year, he made his first appearance with the Brazil National Team at age 16. During his prolific international career, Pelé won three FIFA World Cup titles (1958, 1962 and 1970) – the only player ever to do so for his country. He retired as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 91 caps, and his unfathomable 1,283 career goals in all competitions will never be topped.
After starring for Santos FC for nearly two decades (1956-74), Pelé spent his last three playing years (1975-77) with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. Though well past his prime, he still dominated in his late 30s and led the Cosmos to the NASL title in his final season. While the league may have been short-lived, Pelé made a huge impact on popularizing the sports of “football” in the U.S.
Fresh to the hobby comes this Pelé 1977 New York Cosmos match worn and signed jersey dating to his final NASL season and last professional soccer campaign altogether. Fittingly, he went out on top with another trophy.
The white cotton Cosmos jersey was the team’s home style, featuring the Cosmos colorful crest stitched on the left chest and three gold embroidered stars on the right reflecting the club's NASL championship pedigree. The V-neck collar and both sleeve ends are trimmed in green and yellow. Pelé’s iconic number "10" is sewn on the right sleeve with a much larger "10" on the back in green numbers outlined in yellow. Behind the collar is Athleta manufacturer tagging with "Official 10" labeled on the front and "Made in Brasil" on the reverse. Pelé has autographed and inscribed the front "Com carinho" [With affection] across the torso in faded black ink. The shirt exhibits tremendous wear with evident soiling and sweat staining.
Authentication & Provenance
Letters of Authenticity from MEARS for the jersey and PSA/DNA for the autograph. Letter of provenance from the sister of Brazilian footballer Afonso Celso Garcia Reis, better known as Afonsinho, who played for several Brazilian clubs in the 1960’s and ‘70’s (Botafogo, Flamengo, Vasco and Fluminense). He was gifted this shirt by Pelé.
