Born in Brazil’s southern state of Minas Gerais, Edson Arantes do Nascimento – the football legend known only as Pelé – signed his first professional contract in 1956 at the age of 15 with prestigious Brazilian club, Santos FC. The following year, he made his first appearance with the Brazil National Team at age 16. During his prolific international career, Pelé won three FIFA World Cup titles (1958, 1962 and 1970) – the only player ever to do so for his country. He retired as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 91 caps, and his unfathomable 1,283 career goals in all competitions will never be topped.
After starring for Santos FC for nearly two decades (1956-74), Pelé spent his last three playing years (1975-77) with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. Though well past his prime, he still dominated in his late 30s and led the Cosmos to the NASL title in his final season. While the league may have been short-lived, Pelé made a huge impact on popularizing soccer in the U.S.
Fresh to the hobby comes this Pelé 1977 New York Cosmos match worn and dual-signed Pony cleats dating to his final NASL season and last professional soccer campaign altogether. Fittingly, he went out on top with another trophy.
The black boots have Pony’s trademarked chevron logo in white on each side with the brand’s classic flip tongues. While no size is labeled, they measure out to his appropriate size 10. The original laces and insoles are intact. The six studs on the bottoms of each cleat show obvious wear. There is some soil staining on the outsoles as well as on the Pony logos and leather exterior. The football icon has autographed each cleat in a white/silver marker (8/10 strength), giving them terrific display quality.
Authentication & Provenance
Letters of Authenticity from MEARS for the cleats and PSA/DNA for the autographs. Letter of provenance from Brazilian center-back Joel Camargo, who played alongside Pelé for the Brazil National Team (1964-70) and Santos FC (1963-71). The two remained friends long after their playing careers. Pelé gave him these boots after he retired. Camargo passed away in 2014.
