This is a rare chance to own a helmet worn by Hall of Fame cornerback Mel Renfro during his final season in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys in 1977 which culminated in a 27-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII. Renfro was named to the Pro Bowl 10 straight seasons from 1964 to 1973. His reliable presence in the secondary and electric returns on special teams helped lead the Cowboys' to six conference titles and two Super Bowls during his 14-year tenure all of which was spent in Dallas. He is still the franchise's all-time leader in interceptions with 52. A track star in college at the University of Oregon under legendary coach Bill Bowerman Renfro became the 2nd athlete in Oregon Ducks history to be named All-America in two sports. He is also considered one of the greatest two-way (offense & defense) players in college football history excelling as a running back kick/punt returner and defensive back for the Ducks.
The Riddell Kra-Lite model helmet shows heavy game use front and back side to side full of scratches scuff marks and other contact blemishes throughout the silver shell and Texas star decals. Two of the plastic clips attaching the facemask to the shell are broken yet the gray-coated facemask itself remains intact and problem-free with clear evidence of game-use. The blue and white stripe down the center of the shell holds several rub marks especially on the rear. "Riddell" is lettered in a now faded colorless shade across a thin layer of leather acting as the front bumper. There is no back bumper most likely due to the early era of this model helmet. 'KRA LITE' is stamped on the rear of the shell next to the warning label. The older-style compression padding inside and original Riddell chinstrap are completely intact and functionable. Individual letter and numbers spelling "RENFRO" and "20" adorn the inside on the left. Aside from the two broken clips this game-used helmet is largely as-issued in appropriate game-used condition.
