NFL Hall of Fame running back Tony Dorsett of the Dallas Cowboys was also one of the greatest rushers in college football history. A three-time First-Team All-America selection at the University of Pittsburgh, Dorsett led the Panthers in rushing each of his four seasons and finished his collegiate career with 6,082 -- then an NCAA record. As a senior in 1976 Dorsett turned in his finest season, racking up 2,150 yards on the ground (5.8 yards per carry) and 22 touchdowns to win the Heisman Trophy. Not only did Dorsett win college football's top award, but the Pitt Panthers also captured the program's first NCAA championship after going undefeated (12-0) under head coach Johnny Majors.
Offered here is Tony Dorsett's game-worn and signed Pittsburgh Panthers road jersey dating to his '76 Heisman and NCAA championship season. The white cotton Russell Athletic jersey (size L) shows significant gridiron action with soiling and sweat staining throughout. There are three torn sections: the rear tail, the right shoulder, and a 12" rip down the right side. The jersey has "DORSETT" ironed on straight across the upper back in navy blue. His number "33" appears front and back as well as on both sleeves in the same navy blue format with a yellow outline. Dorsett has autographed the upper back in blue marker with his jersey number "33" inscribed.
Includes a letter of provenance from the Newport Sports Museum, which housed thousands of game-used memorabilia items at its Newport Beach (Calif.) location for decades. Founded by USC alum and donor John Hamilton, the museum closed down in 2014. Dorsett's signature has been pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
