When Bobby Murcer came up to the Yankees in 1964, he was heralded as “the next Mantle.” The two men had much in common, including being Oklahoma natives, shortstops early in their careers, and eventual Yankees centerfielders. Unlike Joe DiMaggio, who had shunned the young Mantle when he was proclaimed “the next DiMaggio,” the Mick befriended his protégé and remained close friends with Murcer long after his playing days were over – as this Type 1 photo clearly reveals. This image captures Mantle and Murcer in the Yankees dugout in 1974. By this time Bobby Murcer had come into his own and the one bright spot on otherwise disappointing Yankees teams of the early 1970s. The Type 1 photo measures 8” x 10” and shows great contrast and toning with all four borders. The reverse has a New York Yankees stamp marking it as a 1974 spring training shot along with several hand written notations. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
