In the spring of 1967, Life Magazine photographer Mark Kauffman captured two of the New York Yankees’ greatest outfielders, sharing a casual moment during spring training. Near the end of his career, Mickey Mantle is shown with legend Joe DiMaggio, the man he replaced back in 1951. Though DiMaggio was resentful at Mantle being called his successor back in 1951, and the rookie initially had found it hard to live up to the expectations placed on him, all animosity had disappeared by the time Kauffman took this shot in 1967. Both are shown in their fresh Yankees home pinstripes with the photo taken from below, depicting the pair in a heroic composition that underlines their legendary status as two of the greatest hitters of all time. The front of the image has some creasing in the upper left corner and has been printed to its edges. The reverse has the Life Magazine stamp and 3-7-67 date, as well as several handwritten notations. The photograph measures 11” x 8.5” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
