In 1972 Philadelphia Phillies southpaw Steve Carlton had a season for the ages. Starting 41 games for the Phillies that year Lefty posted a record of 27-10 that included 30 complete games and eight shutouts. He posted these remarkable numbers despite playing for a team that finished that finished in sixth place in the National League East standings with a record of 59-97. It was a remarkable campaign of durability and consistency that the 6 4 hurler wearing No. 32 would never surpass although he pitched for 16 more seasons.
He led the league in strikeouts (310) and ERA (1.97) in 72 and to no ones surprise earned the N.L. Cy Young award garnering 100% of the first-place votes. It would mark the first of four Cy Young awards for Carlton. His having won 46% of his team's victories that season is still a record in modern major league history.
This is Carltons complete Philadelphia Phillies white pinstriped home uniform from 1972 his first Cy Young-winning season. The jersey showing game usage has Carleton (misspelled) chain-stitched in black on the inside back collar with proper Wilson tag (size 46) sewn on to the front left tail just above a strip tag reading 72 Set 2. His embroidered uniform number 32 is sewn on to the front right chest area with the larger Phillies log (P) sewn on to the left front chest. Carlton has signed the front of the jersey in black fine-point marker and inscribed it: 1972 Cy Young 27-10 1.97 ERA. His large embroidered uniform number (32) graces the back of the jersey. The accompanying Wilson pants (size 36) sport a sewn-in strip tag reading Carleton 72 26 Set 1 attached to the inside rear waistband area and show game usage. The pinstriped pants have also been signed and inscribed by Carlton in like fashion to the jersey across the front left leg. All original and graded A10 by MEARS.
