Newly arrived Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Steve Carlton had a season to remember in 1972. Starting 41 games for the Phillies that year Lefty posted a record of 27-10 that included 30 complete games and eight shutouts. He posted these remarkable numbers despite playing for a team that finished that finished in sixth place in the National League East standings with a record of 59-97. It was a remarkable campaign of durability and consistency that the 6 4 hurler wearing No. 32 would never surpass although he pitched for 16 more seasons.
He led the league in strikeouts (310) and ERA (1.97) in 72 and to no ones surprise earned the N.L. Cy Young award garnering 100% of the first-place votes. It would mark the first of four Cy Young awards for Carlton. His having won 46% of his team's victories that season is still a record in modern major league history. In fact in the voting for N.L. MVP Carlton finished in fifth place behind sluggers George Foster Greg Luzinski Dave Parker and Reggie Smith.
Offered here is the MacGregor KCX model glove worn by Lefty during his most remarkable season. The well-worn glove which actually has the MacGregor manufacturers label cut out includes Carltons 32 written in black marker on the thumb portion just to the right of where 27 Game Winner is written in blue marker. The top of the glove includes Carltons signature in black marker below which he has inscribed: 72 Cy Young G.U. An incredible piece of leather sports history from one of baseballs greatest pitching campaigns ever.
