The 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers were an incredible force to be reckoned with. Led by their head coach Hall of Famer Bill Sharman along with fellow Hall of Fame players Wilt Chamberlain Jerry West and Gail Goodrich the Lakers rolled to a 69-13 regular-season record and made it back to the NBA Finals for the second straight year. Fellow Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor was also on the roster at the start of the season but just nine games in decided to retire due to nagging knee injuries. Another member of that year’s squad was 6’ 10” power forward/center Leroy Ellis who averaged 4.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He played 74 games that season and averaged nearly 15 minutes per outing. The Lakers not only won the NBA Finals by knocking off the New York Knicks in five games but also recorded a still-standing NBA record of 33 straight victories during the regular season. From November 5 1971 until January 9 1972 no team could beat the mighty Lakers.

This lot features the 1972 Los Angeles Lakers NBA Championship 14K gold ring that was awarded to Ellis following that memorable season. The size 11 ¾ beauty weighs 36 grams and boasts a stunning largediamond in the center. The diamond which appears to be popping out of a basketball design is surrounded by raised lettering that reads: “NBA WORLD CHAMPIONS.” The left shank reads “L.ELLIS” and includes the Lakers team logo the facade of the Fabulous Forum and additional text that reads “33 STRAIGHT” and “69-13.” The right shank includes the Jerry West-silhouetted NBA logo flanked by the year “19” and “72.” The inside of the band is engraved “BALFOUR 14K.” This ring not only commemorates one of the greatest seasons in NBA history but also represents the longest winning streak (33) the league has ever seen. Ellis died on June 2 2012. He was 72 years old.

Includes LOA from LeRoy Ellis.
