Carlos Monzon was the undisputed World Middleweight Champion for more than seven years (Nov. 1970 to July 77). He successfully defended his title 14 times and is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990 he was chosen by The Ring magazine in 2002 as the 11th greatest fighter of the last 80 years. Monzon first won the world middleweight title on Nov. 7 1970 when he upset reigning champion Nino Benvenuti with a 12-round TKO in Lazio Italy. This lot includes Monzons fight-worn Corti boxing gloves that he wore three fights later on March 6 1971 against Roy Lee in Santa Fe Argentina. Monzon scored a second-round TKO that night over Lee in what was to be a scheduled 10-rounder. The pair of fight-worn black gloves show ample usage and include Monzons signature in blue ink on the outside of the right glove just above the manufacturers label. It appears Monzon added the incorrect date of 3-8-71 next to his signature. A superb pair of sports memorabilia items from one of boxing hardest-hitting middleweight who tallied an unbelievable professional record of 87 wins three losses and nine draws with 58 of his victories coming by way of knockout.
