The Green Bay Packers dominated theNational Football League and the first two Super Bowls from their tinynorthern Wisconsin hamlet but Joe Namath and company seemingly decided itwas time for some big-city bravado by the time Super Bowl III rolledaround. With Namath’s infamous “guarantee” in place before kickoff theupstart American Football League finally made the statement that hadbeen more than a decade in the making. The AFL Champion Jets bested theheavily favored Baltimore Colts 16-7 and if the question of prevailingNFL superiority wasn’t completely put to rest with the victory therecertainly was an enormous dent neatly placed at the center of thedebate.
With that sterling resume comes this strikingly pristine officialRiddell VSR-4 Proline Jets helmet to tell that story filled as it iswith 25 autographs from that legendary Jets squad with some of theplayers adding their uniform number inscription. The lineup now asthen starts with Broadway Joe: Namath (easily the largest of allautographs) Don Maynard George Sauer Matt Snell Emerson BoozerLarry Grantham Bill Baird Curley Johnson John Elliott Bob TalaminiRalph Baker and others. The contrast of the bold black Sharpieautographs on the white helmet is breathtaking which probably seemsappropriate for an artifact linked with this particular game that isoften described with the very same adjective. As noted the helmet presents essentially like new. There is a Steiner hologram affixed to rear of the helmet.
