The 1966 Topps Baseballissue is one of the most revered sets of its time. What it may have lacked in that one elite rookie it certainly made up for in star power dozens of legendary Hall of Famers and high-numbered shortprints. The598-card set features Mickey Mantle Roberto Clemente Hank Aaron andPete Rose the rookie cards of Hall of Famers Jim Palmer and Don Sutton anda very tough #1 leadoff card of Willie Mays. It is known as one of the more condition-sensitive sets ever produced by Topps its key cards often burdened with weak centering and tilted front frames. Such obstacles toachieving an above-average rating combined with its elusive shortprints make the 1966 Topps set one of the most difficultto complete in high-grade status. That is why this offered complete set is so special.
Currently ranked #17 on the PSA Registry ck's topps baseball 66 has a 7.98 set rating and 8.01 GPA. While very respectable this ranking is deceivingly lower than deserved. The one card graded by a different company than PSA #580 Billy Williams comes in at SGC 96 Mint 9 making it almost a certainty that a conversion will elevate the adjusted set rating and GPA as "100% PSA complete." Based on the tight standings from #13 to #17 we feel this set would likely jump above 8.00 set rating and GPA to slide in at 13th or 14th if card #598 was removed from its SGC slab and put in a PSA holder. The facts remain that this set averages a PSA NM-MT 8 grade and is a gem by any standards or ranking.
