To mark Mickey Mantle’s 2,000th game in pinstripes, the Yankees declared September 18, 1965 “Mickey Mantle Day.” Among the dignitaries and former baseball stars on the field that day was Senator Robert F. Kennedy, a rising star in the Democrat Party and just a few years away from his ill-fated presidential run. While the Mick was a hero to millions of boys and girls, RFK would become an inspiration to many of those same kids as they became young adults. This Type 1 photo shows the two American icons shaking hands during the pre-game ceremony. As a side note, legend has it Joe DiMaggio, one of the dignitaries on the field that day, went out of his way to avoid RFK due to his belief that he and his brother John F. Kennedy had something to do with his former wife Marilyn Monroe’s death. The Type 1 photo shows edge wear on all sides and some creasing in the white border area. The reverse is clear of credit stamps but does have the original caption slug affixed. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
