Cassius Clay shocked the boxing world when he defeated Sonny Liston and won the WBA, WBC, NYSAC, and The Ring heavyweight titles in 1964. Renaming himself “Muhammad Ali, the champ defended his title against Liston in May of 1965 and became one of the most famous sports figures in the world. Young, brash, and outspoken, Ali used his newfound fame to bring attention to causes personal to him, most prominently for Civil Rights for Black Americans and against the Vietnam War. Ali gave a voice to millions and, in turn, inspired millions. This fabulous Type 1 shows the new hero of Black America signing autographs for his young fans in Harlem shortly after his rematch against Sonny Liston. The front of the photo shows nice contrast and toning with full white borders. The reverse has the United Press International credit stamp, several 1965 date stamps, a newspaper clipping, and various handwritten notations in pencil. The photograph measures 9” x 7” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
