Sharp-eyed baseball observers in the fall of 1964 certainly had inklings that the Yankees' unmatched reign atop the American League was approaching its end but it still would have been difficult to imagine that Mickey Mantle would never see another World Series. This incredible Mickey Mantle game-worn jacket is attributed to that fabled World Series when an aging Mantle and his comrades came up against a young Bob Gibson and the National League Champion Cardinals. Mantle would sock three homers in the Series Nos. 16-18 firmly establishing himself as the all-time World Series Home Run Champion even if he never did get another swing in the Fall Classic. This MacGregor Size 46 jacket is a stunner showing heavy game wear but no discernible staining or tears nice whiteness remaining in the NY logo on the breast (and no fraying or puckering of the stitching) and the piping on the collar and sleeves and leather trim on the front pockets in essentially perfect condition as is the attractive gray fur lining inside. The circular Yankees patch on the left sleeve is in a condition matching and worthy of the rest of the jacket; a hand-printed tag with the No. 7 is below the collar inside. In short a museum-worthy masterpiece that indeed had been considered for donation or loan to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Only the happenstance of that not materializing permits such a treasure which had been in the personal collection of John Johnson longtime Yankees official and once the President of the National Association to be available for public sale. Contemplating an exhausted Mickey Mantle wearing this jacket in the Yankees' dugout as their World Series dominance comes to a close offers a rare glimpse into the power of memorabilia to captivate and excite. Truly makes you wonder what a jacket might be worth that represents the final appearances in the World Series of a Hall of Fame legend whose name is virtually synonymous with the event itself. Comes with a detailed two-page Letter of Authenticity from MEARS that features a half-dozen photographs from 1964 showing this style of jacket in use by various Yankees including two in the World Series.
