This is a wonderful important artifact from the beloved Yankee that coveted rarity that represents a Mickey Mantle piece that has never before been offered in the hobby. Try to imagine a more compelling piece than a game-used batting helmet from Mickey's 18th and final season of his storied Hall of Fame career. At 36 years old - and actual mileage may vary and by his own admission much older because of his lifestyle choices - Mantle was but a shadow of his younger self by then but the glimpses of the legendary power were still there to be spotted even as his final season unfolded.

The amazing helmet is presented here with impeccable provenance that includes a super 8-by-10-inch black-and-white newspaper Wirephoto showing Mantle using the helmet in a spring training game in Florida with a significant scratch just above the "NY" logo providing all the photo-matching cred that could ever be desired. The First-Generation photo is a great complementary piece to the helmet with official "Herald" newspaper stampings on the reverse and hand-printed notations indicating the year 1968 "The Mickey Mantle File" and cosmically superfluous detail indicating that Mantle was the one with the bat and Etchebarren the catcher.

The Size 7 1/2 helmet shows an enormous amount of game use and has a No. 7 inside the helmet written by hand on masking tape. Comes with a letter from the consignor stating that he was given the helmet in the 1980's by a New York Yankees scout and that it has been in his personal collection ever since.
