Addendum: Description has been updated based on more research.

A rivalry going back to the Giants’ former home at the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan was renewed in the 1962 World Series a classic 7-game thriller eventually won by the New York Yankees. It was the first and only time the two teams have ever played in the Fall Classic since the Giants moved to San Francisco in ’58. The nail-biting end in the deciding Game 7 is still one that resonates 56 years later. With runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the ninth Giants slugging first baseman Willie McCovey scorched a line drive that was caught by Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson to preserve a 1-0 win for Ralph Terry and the Bronx Bombers. The Giants outscored the Yanks 21-20 in the seven games an indication of just how close they came to winning their first Series on the west coast. It would be 48 years before they finally did it.

Offered here is an oversized metallic painted sign promoting the four 1962 World Series games played at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The bright-colored tin sign measures 24.75” by 60” and features a Giants batter at center with a red white and blue background that also reveals the Golden Gate Bridge and a large tree. The series match-up details are in large black block letters with ticket prices and game day information at the lower end. There is a typo where it states Game 6 was played on Oct. "16" (should say "15"). On the bottom right corner is a copyright stamp with “1962 Milhauser Sign.” The edges and corners show heavy wear and rusting but for the most part the painted colors remain vibrant.

The sign was previously owned by notable Bay Area collector Martin Jacobs. It is unknown when and where this sign was posted. We were unable to find photos online of a similar sign at that timein San Francisco—understandable since it would have been almost surelyposted well outside the stadium. Therefore we can only attribute this sign to being made around the time of the 1962 World Series. And based on the fact that rain in NY and SF postponed Games 5 and 6 to later dates it would seem probable that this sign was made after the series.
