This dramatic Type 1 captures the action in the 5th inning of Game 2 of the 1961 World Series. Going into the top of the fifth, the Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees were tied at 2-2. With two out, Reds second baseman Elio Chacón hit a fly ball single to center off Yankees starter Ralph Terry. Eddie Kasko followed with another single to center, sending Chacón to third. That brought Vada Pinson up. With the count 2 and 2, Yankees catcher Elston Howard misplayed a passed ball. The ball rolled just fifteen feet behind Howard, but Ralph Terry was slow to leave the mound and cover the plate. Elio Chacón, in a daring bit of baserunning, was able to score from third, sliding beneath Howard’s diving tag. Home plate umpire Jocko Conlan calls Chacón safe as Ralph Terry looks on helplessly. Batter Vada Pinson is also in the frame, off to the side, watching the action unfold. The Reds held on to lead and won Game 2 by a score of 6-2. The front of the Type 1 photo shows some light rippling along the bottom edge and a crease in the upper right corner. The reverse has an N.E.A. credit stamp, the original caption slug, and several handwritten pencil notations. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
